The glass bottle polishing process is a technique that uses physical or chemical methods to remove defects such as lines and scratches from the glass surface, enhancing the transparency and refractive index of the glass to make the product look smoother and more aesthetically pleasing. Below are common glass bottle polishing processes:
Physical Polishing
- Flame Polishing: This involves softening and baking the glass surface with a flame. The thermal shock from the flame removes defects like slant lines and wrinkles on the glass surface. This method is suitable for soda-lime glass and high borosilicate glass, but it may reduce the surface flatness of the glass and poses a risk of shattering.
- Mechanical Polishing: Glass surfaces are polished using polishing powder through high-speed friction to remove scratches and imperfections. Before polishing, the glass surface is typically ground with a diamond grinding disc of 400 grit or higher. The commonly used polishing powder is cerium oxide, which is effective but has a slower polishing speed.
Chemical Polishing
- Acid Polishing: This process uses the corrosive action of acid on the glass surface to achieve a polished effect. Similar to mechanical polishing, the glass surface needs to be ground with sandpaper before acid polishing. Acid polishing can reduce the thickness of the glass, but it may not completely remove surface patterns. The formula needs to be adjusted according to the type of glass. Additionally, acid polishing is hazardous and is not recommended for non-professionals.
Laser Polishing
Laser polishing is an emerging polishing technology suitable for complex-shaped glass products. The process includes 5+3-axis machining, 8-axis machining, or 9-axis machining. When the geometry of the part is complex, a 9-axis machining process is usually adopted. Laser polishing achieves high-precision polishing of the glass surface by precisely controlling the laser power and movement trajectory, while minimizing damage to the glass surface.
Applications
Glass bottle polishing is widely used in industries such as food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics to enhance the appearance and transparency of products. For example, medical glass bottles can be polished to improve their transparency and refractive index, giving the products a higher quality appearance.
